The newly crowned Miss Deaf Universe 2025 says it has always been her dream to win the prestigious pageant.

Lisa Msiza made history over the weekend by becoming the first Black woman to be crowned Miss Deaf Universe at the event held in Italy.

Speaking to Diary Series of Deaf People just a few minutes before boarding her flight to South Africa, Lisa said:

“I felt so speechless because I never knew that I would win the big world. I always wanted to be the winner to make history, and it happened.”

Lisa arrived in South Africa today. She said it was through her family’s prayers that she secured the title.

“They prayed hard for me to win so it would show the world how I won as Miss Deaf Universe. I feel so happy that I won because I worked hard and fought hard. It feels so good to wear the crown and sash,” said Lisa.

She also shared that her family is very happy that she is bringing the crown home to South Africa. Looking ahead, Lisa is eager to work with the Miss+ Mister Deaf Universe organisation.

“I am willing to collaborate with Miss +Mister Deaf Universe organisation to do a fashion show with my clothing business for the fashion showcase,” she explained.

Born Deaf, Lisa’s home language is South African Sign Language. She is a top achiever from the 2020 matric class and was placed in the fifth position at the World Deaf Model competition in 2021.

Miss + Mister Deaf Universe’s main objective is to raise awareness about social inclusion, guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The event aims to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of fundamental human rights and freedoms for people with disabilities. It also seeks to promote respect for their inherent dignity by breaking down barriers that prevent their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.
