These are the national and international activities for Deaf Awareness month. 

1-6 September: Inclusive Education 

Advocating for quality multilingual inclusive education that provides Deaf learners inclusion through South African Sign Language. We encourage individuals, organisations and government to sign up for SASL rights by signing the WFD Declaration on the Rights of Deaf Children!

7-14 September: SASL Advocacy 

Encourage everyone to actively advocate for the rights of Deaf individuals and for the implementation of SASL as an official language. Sign up for SASL rights by promoting SASL in public arenas.

15-18 September: Building Resilient Deaf Communities 

Building the capacity of Deaf communities on emergency preparedness and response to mitigate disaster risks and reduce deaf communities’ vulnerability in the face of disasters. Sign up for SASL rights by demonstrating partnerships between deaf communities and emergency responders.

19-22 September: Diversity in Deaf Communities

Embracing the diversity in Deaf communities where every Deaf individual with intersecting identities is recognized. Sign up for SASL rights by highlighting the many intersectional identities of our diverse deaf communities strengthen our communities today!

23 September: International Day of Sign Languages

Sign Up for SASL Rights Striving towards a better implementation of the CRPD in South Africa through the linguistic human rights of Deaf people in view of the 20th anniversary of the CRPD in 2026. Sign up for SASL rights by working with your local and provincial associations to announce the achievement of a concrete goal for Deaf communities today.

24-28 September: Deaf Cultural Celebrations

Celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Deaf communities through SASL and Deaf culture. Deaf Culture involves the behaviours, traditions, beliefs, values, history, humour, art that exists within Deaf communities. We are proud of our linguistic and cultural identities. Sign up for SASL rights by hosting an event on one of the 5 days in this period that demonstrates the rich cultures of our Deaf communities.

29-30 September: Investing in the future of deaf communities

Let’s support Deaf children and their families’ connections with Deaf communities to ensure early exposure to SASL and access to language rich environments. Sign up for SASL Rights by sharing a video on social media of your vision for the future of our Deaf communities. Encourage people to share on social media their vision of the future.
